It might be a little too reverentially 90s for my taste, with some baby-doll vocals that could probably go an octave deeper, but I kinda like PRISSY CLERKS’ debut LP “Bruised or Be Bruised”. They’re from Minneapolis, and put this one out this past December. If they’d have been a little more flannel-flyin’ and less cutie-pie I’d compare them to SWEARIN’, another recent band I sort of dig.

It’s a “big twee” sound, often on the Pavement/Breeders side of things, but just as often pretty roaring and splayed-out in garage/noise breakdown mode. See what you think about the title track here.

As you can see, my copy got a little waterlogged and/or damaged over the years, but this is a lost early 1983 hardcore punk fanzine from Seattle called ATTACK, #8. It was published by Jo Smitty, aka Jeff Smith, then of the band Mr. Epp & The Calculations, and later the man behind Feminist Baseball fanzine, a record label and even a pizza place.

His teenage bandmate Mark Arm contributes many of the reviews in this one, some of which I’ll be posting in the weeks to come.

Hey, I got my act together and put together a new phony radio show/podcast for you this week, and it’s a brain eraser/mind blower/humdinger of a show, if you ask me. Quite a few new things to play for you this time, all clocking in at just a couple minutes more than an hour. You can stream it, you can download it – but most importantly, you can take a chance and potentially have the entire course of your life changed by it.

You’ll hear new stuff from EDIBLE ARRANGEMENTS, GRASS WIDOW, THE BLIND SHAKE, CANDY HIGHWAY, VERONICA FALLS and more…..and some would-be “classics” and never-weres from The Blank-Its, Reversible Chords, Crack Und Ultra Eczema, Supercharger and many more.

Stream the show, or download it for later listening here.

Ready for another stunner of a band from England? Meet EDIBLE ARRANGEMENTS. Info’s hard to come by – they’re new, you see – but they’ve got a debut “tape”/digital download that you can grab for 3 GBP. What’s that, like 20 cents? You can afford it, is what I’m saying.

They’re a minimalist, ramshackle, rain-on-the-windows, riots-in-the-streets sort of DIY pop/art student band that could only be from England. 2013, 1979 – who cares, right? It’s a fantastic, insular sort of sound that you’ll both find recognizable and warmly friendly and a little jarring to boot.
