A treatise and call to action on the band V-3, published in Siltbreeze fanzine #6 around 1990.

Just got hipped to a new issue of Gerard Cosloy’s CONFLICT magazine, “first in 22 years”. Truly a “formative” magazine in my, uh, musical development and retardation. There was that spring break around 1986 where I borrowed Jackie Ockene’s huge stack of Conflict back issues and read them cover-to-cover at my parents’ house. Never looked back. Indie rock was on.
So I haven’t read Gerard’s latest, but I’m certain the snark will be off the charts, and the musical taste will be superlative. Click here to download Conflict’s first post-Information Superhighway edition.

Ad for the 3-song HALO OF FLIES single Siltbreeze Records put out in 1989, the very first release for that label.

HOWE GELB from Giant Sand, looking regal in Forced Exposure magazine #15. This was from around the time of “Storm”, which is when I saw them (1988) live at Raji’s in Los Angeles – one of the more eye-opening and best rock shows I’d seen to date at that time. (They opened for the Lazy Cowgirls by following them onto the stage at about 12:45am…).

SILTBREEZE magazine’s “picks” from Issue #8, which, judging from the records they most loved, came out in about 1988. This is a tame, almost-SFW photo compared to the rest of the issue’s marginalia. Damn those fellas had some good taste, though, hunh?

STONE BY STONE and CHRIS D. ad from Forced Exposure #16 fanzine, 1990.

Another crazy CRYPT RECORDS ad, this one from 1990, scanned out of Forced Exposure #16 fanzine.

Early SUN CITY GIRLS and Majora Records ad, from Forced Exposure #16, 1990.

Classy fanzine called FLESH AND BONES from 1989 or so. This was their last issue – a terrific read, even if most of the bands were of the “hesher”/pre-grunge variety. And no, I don’t know who that is on the cover.
