The newest episode of my hour-long music podcast, DYNAMITE HEMORRHAGE RADIO (#22), was recorded in a hotel room in Oslo, Norway this week, rather than in our home base of San Francisco. See if you can detect a distinct “Scandinavian” flair to the show, to say nothing of the babbling and storytelling brought on by extreme jet lag. With a plate of smoked salmon by my side and speed skaters cavorting outside of my window, I played new music from Hannah Lew (Grass Widow)’s COLD BEAT, from Baltimore’s WILDHONEY, as well as a new punisher from Australia’s EASTLINK – to go with some righteous tunes from other eras from Monoshock, Bill Direen & The Bilders, Weenie Roast, Fifty Foot Hose, Slovenly, Mike Rep & the Quotas and more.

For you “Breaking Bad” finale fans who already know and love the Badfinger song that closed out the entire series, let me introduce you to a cover version of the song that’s nearly as good – Barbara Manning and the San Francisco Seals’ “Baby Blue”, from ‘93’s “NoWHere” album.

She said she was gonna do it, and then she did it. Erika Elizabeth, the exceptionally knowledegable and savvy WMUA disc jockey who left Western Massachusetts for Portland, OR, now has put together her second digital radio show/podcast, which you can download over on her blog.

Her “Expressway To Yr Skull” show has been vital to my discovery of multiple bands and to my rejuvenation/reawakening to the whys and wherefores of raw, underground rock and roll music – especially of the more obscure pop and female-fronted DIY/punk stuff. And she breaks the news over on the recent post that she’ll be a prime contributor to the upcoming Dynamite Hemorrhage print fanzine, which is coming along pretty fine, actually. Go and download years & years of her shows here – you’ll get yourself muscially schooled & perhaps be a more interesting person as a result.

There is an unparalleled sense of teenage joy & punk rock lust that comes screaming off the grooves of all the early 80s RED CROSS material, particularly their masterpiece LP, “Born Innocent”, one of my favorite records ever.

There’s a bootleg I bought in 1993 or so that serves up 6 fantastic demos from the same era, including one (“It Doesn’t Matter”) that didn’t make it to the album. Some of the versions – “Solid Gold” for instance – are barely recognizable, and they rule all the same. Here’s “Every Day There’s Someone New” from that same session.
