Was surprised to see a copy of 8-TRACK MIND for sale the other day at Needles and Pens in San Francisco. I never got too worked up about 8-Track tape nostalgia, given that it’s easily the worst musical format of all time, so I’d never owned a copy of this 90s/00s fanzine before. That might have been a missed opportunity, because for a buck or two or whatever I paid for the new one, I got an edifying dose of a classic “fanzine” in every sense of the world.

Picked this one up because of a series of interesting think pieces about the resurgence of analog formats – LPs and cassettes primarily – and what the hell that means in 2013/14. It’s a real good set of reads. These are the true, unabashed defenders of the vinyl and tape faith, arguing their case with logic and passion – and now, with legion of twentysomethings and their buying habits to back them up.

I think you can probably get in touch with editor Russ Forster here and order one if you’d like.

DYNAMITE HEMORRHAGE – Issue #1 Zine

64 pages constructed with a quality that far exceeds punk fanzine standards.  The first thing you’ll notice is that it just feels nice to hold in your hands.  Content to boot as well.
A definitive interview with Chris D. (Flesh Eaters), focused solely on 1977-80 LA punk; Slash magazine; Upsetter Records and his band
Retrospective and interview with Sally Skull, 1994-97 all female, criminally forgotten low-fidelity Scottish garage/art/punk band
Interviews with Sex Tide and Household, two of today’s best bands working the raw minimalism circuit
Interview with the gentlemen from Bona Dish, an early 80s UK DIY band who’ve recently surfaced again thanks to a reissue of their cassette material
A comprehensive piece by the editor of Fuckin’ Record Reviews blog on various obscure 80s/90s fanzines
56 record reviews, penned by Expressway To Yr Skull’s Erika Elizabeth and editor Jay Hinman
17 (lengthy) book reviews (Probably my personal favorite)

Dynamite Hemorrhage Radio returns in 2014 with a show so packed with hits that we had to exceed our 1-hour cutoff a little, so we hope you’ll forgive the extra 7 or 8 minutes here. We think it’s well worth your while to finish all 68 minutes, or else how would you be able to fully ingest outstanding new material from Octapgrape, the Ausmuteants (pictured here), Warm White, Veronica Falls, Blank Realm and Violent Change?

Or “library” material from The Fall, The Middle Class, Electric Manchakou, Boss Hog and Stiff Legged Sheep, among others? Take a listen and let us know what you think – and if you feel like giving it a rating in iTunes, we’d be quite obliged.

Who out there hasn’t heard Ike & Tina Turner’s amazing 1970 b-side ode to drug parties called “Contact High”?

I sure hadn’t, until my pal Anthony dug it out of a record crate in the 1990s, and proceeded to later cover the song in his band The Resineators a few years later. It’s the most straightforward “rock” song I’ve ever heard associated with either Turner, outside of Ike’s early raw instrumental stuff at the dawn of the 60s. I think you’d better have a listen if this isn’t already part of your collection.

The first and only time I saw THE SPITS was in 2003 in Seattle, having never heard nor heard of the band before this time. I wrote them up (and partially defamed and mocked them in the process) on my old blog Agony Shorthand, and was absolutely delighted when one of the band members got into a pissing contest with me in the comments section. So fun. Alas, those comments disappeared years ago.

Just so happens I glommed onto the band in the intervening years, truly discovering that they were an active punk rock powerhouse in 2012, when I wrote up this review on my other (still active) blog The Hedonist Jive.

Last night, I saw ‘em play for the second time at The Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco, from whence this 11-second video originated. Total blast. I threw all intelligence to the wind, dropped my knuckles to the floor and let it rip. I didn’t stagedive nor get into any fistfights, though others did, and why the hell not. Excellent ripsnorting 60-second robot punk, one right after the other, and worth almost every second of opening-band suffering/bleeding I had to endure to get to them.
