This is a photo I took of THE DUST DEVILS live at CBGB in New York City, May 1993. They were opening for Claw Hammer, The Unsane and Rocket From The Crypt. That’s Matador Records head and Conflict editor Gerard Cosloy playing bass there on the right, which surprised the hell out of me when he stepped on stage.

Dust Devils were awesome, by the way, but on the decline a bit….their 1991 show at the 6th Street Rendezvous in San Francisco floored me, but they were flattening out a bit by this time.

Stunning, echo-laden, slide guitar-murder, low-fidelity version of “Devil in the Woods” by THE GUN CLUB from the Keats Rides a Harley multi-artist compilation from 1981, the same year as “Fire of Love”. A lesser version of this track came out on the Gun Club’s (lesser) second album a year later.

FAMILY CURSE, a moderne loud rock band from New York City, have just released their first album “Twilight Language”, and Dynamite Hemorrhage thinks it’s pretty good.

These guys would’ve been right in the wheelhouse of the Touch&Go/Amphetamine Reptile stable around 1989-91, and I’m going to go out on a big limb and say that they’ve probably got some records in their group collection from The Fall, Cop Shoot Cop, Tar, Rat At Rat R, Surgery and Pussy Galore. See what you think by listening to “No Return”, which kicks off the album.

The one-woman, 1980 UK “band” THE PETTICOATS put our their/her only 45 on the Blah Blah Blah label, and it’s a masterpiece of frantic, buzzing DIY punk. Definitely something the fell below the radar for most of us for many years; I never even heard mention of the single until a little over a decade ago, when the song “Normal” made it onto a Killed By Death comp and a bootleg called “Instant Pop Classics”.

Later, Times New Viking covered this one, “Allergy”, and I think it’s my favorite of the three mindblowers on Stef Petticoat’s single. Share this around with yr pals – they’ll thank you for it.

I sort of passed over the 1994 “Starfish” album by the UK’s FAT TULIPS in favor of their earlier singles and EPs, but was reminded of this shredding C-86 style loud pop song the other day when it was played on WMUA’s  Expressway To Yr Skull. OK, definitely one stellar track on that album. See if you agree.
