This fanzine, SUPERDOPE #8, is one that I put out in 1998, and one of which I still have multiple copies left. I’m selling if you’re buying.

It’s a digest-sized ‘zine with a long piece on my then-favorite 45rpm singles, each individually reviewed and explained. You can get a sense from the cover of what kind of music we’re talking about here. The magazine also has reviews of then-au courant rocknroll acts as well.

Only $3 to US residents ($4 Canada, $7 rest of world), via Paypal, to jayhinman(at)hotmail(dotcom). Make sure you provide your address to me there and I’ll wing one out to you right away.

Just discovered this track today from PROTO IDIOT, a 1-man band from the UK who has an excellent TV Personalities-style insouciance that I found myself enjoying greatly right off the bat.

The track’s called “You Can’t Hide”, and it came out about 8 months ago. Now I just have to figure out how to find a digital mp3 of this thing.

cheaterslicks:

This is not us. Nor are the records recorded by The Cheaterslicks our records, although they pop up online associated with us all of the time. And this band says there is no confusion in their using our name (est. 1987). This band started in the mid 2000’s.

How do you stop a band from using your name? We’ve asked these guys over and over to stop, and they won’t and they put out records under our name. Not worth getting a lawyer about, but it pisses me off. They claim they can use the name because they don’t put a space between “cheater” and “slicks”. OK. See what happens to the new band the Rollingstones.

Always loved rockabilly, always HATED this type of cornball rockabilly. That just makes it worse.

I pulled in quite an ethnic music haul at Amoeba Music in San Francisco today. It’s probably the most I’ve spent in a single day on music in at least five years – thankfully mostly on credit.

While shopping at Amoeba I realized I was witnessing the store’s death rattle, which was unsurprising yet caught me a little off guard (examples: about 40 people in the enormous store on a Saturday afternoon; CD buy backs at about 25-50 cents a pop; no lines; diminished stock on just about everything; new reduced store hours (closing at 8 every night on a very high-trafficked street). I’ll write some more about that next week on my other music/film/literature blog The Hedonist Jive.

England’s DESPERATE BICYCLES not only wrote songs encouraging people to join bands, start labels and whatnot, they also provided this handy 1978 primer on their rights upon getting arrested. Many Britons of punk age were, in fact, finding themselves under arrest around this time – miners’ strikes, dole queues and all that.

“Advice on Arrest” was one of 6 songs on their “New Cross, New Cross” 7"EP, and I thought you might like to hear it.
