Total minimalist electro-scuzz from a lost gluewave/punk act purportedly from LA called SPIDER, who released this one only a half-decade ago (2008) on a 6-song 12"EP. I need someone to tell me more about the glories of Spider. Did they ever play live? Is it true that this is a member of Seattle’s The Spits, a girlfriend, and a drum machine? Talk to me.

COSLOY YOUTH fanzine from Houston, TX, 1988. Ray Shea, one of the two movers behind this one, was a late 80s/early 90s DJ with me at KFJC. He was moderately embarrassed and blown away when I told him I had a copy of his fanzine.

The title refers, of course, to Conflict Magazine’s Gerard Cosloy, who also helmed Homestead Records at the time. Many, many ‘zines of the day emulated the man’s “cutting” prose stylings and encyclopedic knowledge of pretty much every band in the rocknroll underground.

It’s all about the young musicmakers of today this time on DYNAMITE HEMORRHAGE RADIO – this 65-minute podcast features a bunch of ‘em, including brand new stuff from Household, Neonates, Wildhoney, The Ar-Kaics, Toxie, Terry Malts, Ruby Pins and even the swan song from Sic Alps. Holy mackerel. I also took a page directly from the book of New Zealand’s (and The Dead C’s) Bruce Russell, and played a set of kiwi postpunk, punk and noise from the early 1980s on “small labels”, just as Mr. Russell did on this excellent podcast. I was taking notes, as you’ll see. The show is rounded out by other sub-underground sound from Jackknife, Blast Off Country Style, The Spits, Dara Puspita, Bona Dish, Flesh Eaters and more.

THE GORDONS “farewell” gig flyer; Wellington New Zealand. From what I can gather, this would have been 1981 or 1982, considering that Naked Spots Dance were also on the bill, who broke up in ‘83.

The Gordons reformed again in 1983, and again in 1984 with their original line-up. Later they morphed into Bailter Space.

1981 minimalist DIY from Liverpool, England’s THE MODERATES. The second overwhelmingly positive pro-nuclear bomb song of the punk and postpunk era, but lacking lyrics as stellar as The Weirdos“Gonna drop it all over the place / You’re gonna get it on your face”.
