I’m back with the 9th edition of the Dynamite Hemorrhage Radio Show Podcast, a podcast that pretends it’s a live radio show but is really just a guy drinking a beer in his den, dragging files across his laptop’s screen, blathering into a mic and then calling it a podcast.
It’s a big hour and ten minutes this time, with rare tracks from bands you’ve heard of (The Cramps, Guided By Voices, Royal Trux and Giant Sand) along with buried gems from bands you haven’t (Liechtenstein, Mambo Taxi, The Girls and Family Curse). In between are bands that your friends have heard of, but that you haven’t: Sic Alps, King Tuff, Veronica Falls, Saccharine Trust, The Consumers, Gang Green, White Fence and many more.

Track listing:

GANG GREEN – Snob
WHITE FENCE – Pink Gorilla
KING TUFF – Sun Medallion
SUZI JANE HOKOM – Home
SIC ALPS – God Bless Her, I Miss Her

Art for Spastics is Back! (For a Show)

Before there was Expressway To Yr Skull, before there was Ribbon Around a Bomb, before there was the Dynamite Hemorrhage Radio Podcast, there was ART FOR SPASTICS. DJ Rick’s radio show on Davis, CA’s KDVS was the first, and for a while, the only, radio show that I downloaded and listened to on my “iPod” every week.

He went away – and for one week at least, he’s back. Absolutely a treasure chest of art punk, noise, bizarro pop & garage and that sorta thing.

Just got hipped to a new issue of Gerard Cosloy’s CONFLICT magazine, “first in 22 years”. Truly a “formative” magazine in my, uh, musical development and retardation. There was that spring break around 1986 where I borrowed Jackie Ockene’s huge stack of Conflict back issues and read them cover-to-cover at my parents’ house. Never looked back. Indie rock was on.

So I haven’t read Gerard’s latest, but I’m certain the snark will be off the charts, and the musical taste will be superlative. Click here to download Conflict’s first post-Information Superhighway edition.

Eat Skull “III”

In case you were wondering where Dynamite Hemorrhage stood on the matter, the new Eat Skull album, which I just finished listening to in its entirety on Spotify, is a total snore. I never much cottoned to the cut of their jib anyway, but was hoping for something along the lines of the wacko Kiwi-pop/sea shanty hybrid they were peddling for a record or two there. Nope. Turgid nod-off rock for the bargain bins of 2014, I’m afraid.

HOWE GELB from Giant Sand, looking regal in Forced Exposure magazine #15. This was from around the time of “Storm”, which is when I saw them (1988) live at Raji’s in Los Angeles – one of the more eye-opening and best rock shows I’d seen to date at that time. (They opened for the Lazy Cowgirls by following them onto the stage at about 12:45am…).
