Memphis, TN’s USELESS EATERS put out a record earlier this year on Southpaw that we’re just getting around to hearing this week at Dynamite Hemorrhage HQ, but we’re the better for having waited. (There’s a new EP that’s come out since then that we’ll work on digesting in about 7 more months). “C’est Bon” is a blitz of minimalist punk rock, reminding one of the best stuff from TYVEK and that first A-FRAMES album.

I’ve actually been more partial to Useless Eaters side project FERAL BEAT to date, but listen to this knockout track “Daft Love” & tell me you didn’t just go bananas in your pants .

Interview: Eric Oblivian on Gonerfest, Memphis, and the New Record

letsgetbent:

Eric Friedl behind the counter at Goner Records

By Rebecca Seung

In 1993, Eric Friedl (of The Oblivians) put out Japanese garage crusaders and part-time zombie hunters Guitar Wolf’s first US release, Wolf Rock!, and thus, Goner Records was born. From humble beginnings, Eric and co-owner Zac Ives have taken the Memphis imprint from label to store and now one of the most well known DIY punk fests in the world: Gonerfest, a four day marathon of the biggest up-and-coming acts you don’t know yet but that you’ll be hearing about soon. Tickets are on sale now, and a full line-up can be seen here.

JOYRIDE, or shall I say, “JOYRIDE!”, are a San Francisco triad of punkers who’ve captured my ears and stolen my proverbial heart w/ their split LP with another band (whom we’ve not yet heard) called BITPART. Lead singer Jenna transcends a somewhat generic fast-tempo’ed pop/HC approach with a sweet set of pipes, reminding me of The Gits, an act whom I saw a few times opening for other bands in the early 90s and who stood tall solely on the strength of their female singer’s voice and personality.

Joyride! are much, much better than the Gits, to be sure, and I’d recommend their half of the split to anyone with ten seconds to get the free download going. Unlike the Faith side of Faith/Void, you don’t even need to pay cash money for the bad stuff in order to own the good.

In Search of Sally Skull

Listen, I’m no charity case, but if anyone knows how I can get my mitts on a digital track called “The Running Kind” by a 90s UK act called SALLY SKULL, I’d reciprocate with something cool in your inbox too. Apparently comes from a 1997 7"EP called “Fractious”, and it is one of the most boss, low-fidelity girl-group screamers I’ve ever heard.
