It’s almost like someone made this show up, but then there’s “The Noise Toys” and the DIY map…..

Elusive and rare flyer for the elusive and rare SALLY SKULL, probably around 1995 or 1996…? Maybe in Scotland? If anyone knows how I can get ahold of a band member, please drop me a line.
Tom Lax pegged Australia’s CONSTANT MONGREL as one of his best of 2012 and I’d never heard of ‘em. So I did a little digging and came up w/ their “Everything Goes Wrong” LP, and the first track, “Reflex” – wham and whoa. A stunning wallop of post-punk razorwire oomph in the early SPK or GORDONS vein. I figured I’d found my favorite record of the year as well.
So I lived with it a little, and came to realize that like a lot of long-players, there’s only a couple of tracks you’ll ever want to hear again. “Reflex” is one. “Four Legs”, which I’m posting for you here, is the other. I could have maintained my bonzai excitement for a few months had this just been a 45. Let me know if I’m off base here.

You may have heard that there’s been a Southern California punk revivalist band fronted by Keith Morris the past couple years called OFF!. I’d done an excellent job keeping them off my radar until yesterday, despite seeing t-shirts and records with Raymond Pettibon artwork around. Keith Morris, Steve McDonald, punk band, 2012…..sure.
Yesterday Ben Ratliff had their album in his Best of 2012 list in the NY Times. I read a book about jazz by Ratliff once that I liked, and he did say the magic words with regard to OFF!’s record – “16 songs in 28 minutes”. Could it….could it be….could it be good? Nope, not really. I got about 7 or 8 tracks into the thing this morning via Spotify and that was more than enough. It’s a cut above “Wonderful”-era CIRCLE JERKS (wasn’t that on Combat Records or Metal Blade or something?), an attempt to recapture some 1979 Black Flag genie-in-a-bottle with lots of screaming in the patented “I’m-going-to-EXPLODE-I’VE-HAD-IT” style.
Far be it for me to disparage a good attempt at creating aggressive and confrontational art at an advancing age, but I think I’ll probably have an equally rewarding cultural life without any more OFF! in it.

NEW DEZEZES fanzine from 1978 San Francisco. I posted the entire fanzine to read and print back in 2010 right here, in case you’re interested.

What with the great Tumblr meltdown of 12-12-12 behind us now, I figured I’d repost this from yesterday, since like, you know, I spent a good hour or two putting this show together….
I’ve created the first of what will hopefully a regular series of 60-minute “radio shows” under the DYNAMITE HEMORRHAGE brand name, and all things considered (like, I had zero idea how to use the GarageBand software I created this in last night even 24 hours ago), it turned out pretty much all right.
Download DYNAMITE HEMORRHAGE RADIO #1
My aim with this thing is to create playlists of music that I like & that you wanna hear; you might just not know it yet. You’ll find clusters of music that slot loosely into underground pop; classic punk; weird psych/noise; 60s garage, pop and girls-in-the-garage; proto-punk; bedroom DIY recordings and even a little undie rock.
I personally have not hosted a radio show in which I talk, “back announce” etc. in over 22 years – proving not only how ancient I am personally, but how rusty my on-mic skills are, which is all too apparent in this first radio show/podcast. You’ll even hear the local dogs barking in the neighbor’s backyard during one segment. My goal is to keep these to a digestible hour in length when I make them, and to not worry so much about flubs & various vocal tics and bad habits that make up my radio persona. In other words, the first take will always be the only take, and I’ll try to do better next show, OK?
With that in mind, let me state for the record that the band Bette Davis & The Balconettes were a late 90s band, not a late 80s act as claimed on Dynamite Hemorrhage Radio #1.
